Expert PGA Betting Picks: John Deere Classic

Austin Cook plays his tee shot on the sixth hole during the first round of the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club on May 3, 2018 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Look, predicting a pre-tournament winner in golf isn’t easy. While it’s true sports bettors can find fantastic value, it’s incredibly frustrating when one of your picks doesn’t even make the cut. That’s why I’m here to help.

Every week I’ll highlight three golfers who have a good chance to win the hardware for the upcoming weekend. This week it’s the John Deere Classic.

My favorite pick: Zach Johnson +1200

At 42, Zach Johnson’s best days on the PGA Tour are behind him, but he has straight-up owned the John Deere Classic in his career. Johnson has made the cut in each of his nine appearances at the tournament, winning once (2012), placing second three times and third on two occasions with a scoring average of 66.89. How’s that for dominant?

The field this week is relatively weak due to the Scottish Open taking place across the pond, so the timing looks right for the Iowa native to collect his 13th win on the tour. The value isn’t great, but due to his past success here and the lesser competition around him, take the +1200 price and run.

Solid value: Austin Cook +3300

Cook has been playing some excellent golf of late, and a T-5 finish at the Greenbrier continued what’s been a strong season. The 2017 RSM Classic winner sits 24th in the FedExCup standings and recently moved within the top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings (99th).

TPC Deere Run is a great fit for Cook’s game, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him firmly in the mix for the majority of the weekend. He’s someone sharp golf bettors and DFS players need to keep an eye on in the coming months.

My favorite sleeper pick: Kelly Kraft +6600

At +6600, Kraft presents the best value on the board this weekend, in my opinion. Kraft is far from a household name and he hasn’t gotten much respect from oddsmakers at this point in his career, but he has everything it takes to win at TPC Deere Run.

Kraft finished T-5 in his debut at the John Deere Classic in 2016 and is coming off a runner-up showing at the Greenbrier. The 29-year-old has already punched his ticket to the Open Championship, so expect him to be playing with a ton of confidence in Illinois.
