2018 British Open Odds: Kisner in Sole Possession of the Lead After 18 Holes

The opening round of the 147th British Open at Carnoustie Golf Links in Angus, Scotland is in the books, and a surprising name sits atop of the leaderboard heading into Friday.

Kevin Kisner has the early lead thanks to a stellar 5-under 66, with Erik van Rooyen (-4), Tony Finau (-4), Zander Lombard (-4), Brandon Stone (-3), Ryan Moore (-3) and Brendan Steele (-3), Matthew Southgate (-2), Danny Willett (-2), Sung Kang (-2), Pat Perez (-2), Jon Rahm (-2), Russell Henley (-2), Rory McIlroy (-2), Zach Johnson (-2) and Chez Reavie (-2) within striking distance of the American.

At Bovada, McIlroy and Rahm are the +1000 favorites to hoist the Claret Jug on Sunday. Justin Thomas (+1400), Finau (+1400), Rickie Fowler (+1600), Tiger Woods (+2000), Francesco Molinari (+2200), Kisner (+2200), Alex Noren (+2500) and Henrik Stenson (+2800) have the top 10 odds.

Who could've called this leaderboard after 18 holes?

On a day that featured decent conditions, it was Kisner who stood out above the pack. The 34-year-old, who started the day as a +40000 long shot, fired an excellent round before the majority of the North American audience even got out of bed. The South African duo of Lombard and van Rooyen came out of seemingly nowhere to rise to the top of the leaderboard, while Finau continued his excellent play in majors this year. The big Utahn was one of my dark horse pre-tournament selections at +10000, so hopefully you were paying attention.

Solid round for Tiger

We’ve seen a lot more disappointments than successes by Woods in big tournaments in recent years, but Eldrick battled the ever-tough Carnoustie well and ended Thursday at even par. The three-time British Open winner was 2-under and into the top 10 after nine holes but fell off a bit later in the day to record a 71 and sit T-32.

Know your Open stats

While bettors may be rushing to back Kisner at the current price, it’s important to note that none of the past seven British Open champions have led after the opening round. Each of the last nine Open champs shot their first round with scores in the 60s, and the last 10 tournament winners were within five shots of the lead after 18 holes.

Whether you refer to it as the British Open, the Open Championship or simply as the Open, there’s no denying the mystique of golf’s third major tournament. The 147th British Open, which takes place July 19-22 at Carnoustie Golf Links in Angus, Scotland, is shaping up to be yet another classic. According to oddsmakers, Dustin Johnson is the favorite to hoist the Claret Jug.

Dustin Johnson is the +1200 favorite to win the 2018 British Open.

Johnson is the +1200 front-runner at Bovada, with Justin Rose (+1600), Rickie Fowler (+1600), Rory McIlroy (+1600), Jordan Spieth (+2200), Jon Rahm (+2200), Tommy Fleetwood (+2200), Justin Thomas (+2200), Brooks Koepka (+2200) and Tiger Woods (+2200) comprising the rest of the top 10 at the shop.

The 2018 edition of the British Open will be the eighth time the event has taken place at Carnoustie. The most recent was in 2007, when Padraig Harrington won the first of his two straight Open titles. To find out my top three plays for the tournament, check out my British Open Expert Picks article. For dark-horse value, visit my sleeper picks piece.

Spieth is the reigning champion after the Texan shot four runs under 70 for a score of 268, which was three strokes ahead of runner-up Matt Kuchar. The triumph was Spieth’s second wire-to-wire victory at a major, along with his 2015 Masters win. Branden Grace set a new major championship record in the third round when he scored a 62. Grace is +4000 to hoist the Claret Jug this time around.

First-time winners have dominated majors in recent years

Since the 2015 PGA Championship, there have been nine first-time major champions (Jason Day, Danny Willett, Dustin Johnson, Henrik Stenson, Jimmy Walker, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Sergio Garcia and Patrick Reed). Koepka enters the British Open on a hot streak after the American claimed his second straight U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.
