Athletics have Won 17 of the Last 21 Games

The Oakland Athletics may have their work cut out of them to catch Houston and Seattle in the AL West but with the way they’ve been playing lately, that may come to fruition. The A’s have won 17 of their last 21 games and look to take another game in Houston after shutting out the Astros 2-0 in the first game of their three-game series. Oakland will have southpaw Sean Manaea starting and the Athletics have won five straight games with the lefty on the mound. Despite Oakland’s recent success, they’re still facing one of the best teams in baseball and opened as +210 dogs tonight.

SHARK BITES
  • The Athletics have won 17 of their last 21 games.
  • Oakland is 1-8 SU and ATS in last nine games vs Astros.
  • The total has gone OVER in 10 of the last 14 games in this matchup.

A’s have been the Hottest Team in Baseball

In the AL West, the story has been the Houston Astros. Coming off a World Series title and possessing the deepest pitching rotation in the majors, you would think this should be a cakewalk for the Astros to own the division but with the way the Mariners and Athletics have been playing, their division just became the most competitive in the MLB.

The A’s are on a tear since mid-June, winning 17 of their last 21 games and have pushed their record to 51-40. While that record would be first in almost every division, this places the A’s nine games back of the Astros and a game like tonight could go a long way for Oakland if plans to challenge the champs.

The only issue though is that these rivals (and Oakland backers) will know that Houston has pretty much dominated this matchup in 2018, winning eight of 10 games and outscoring the A’s 70-30.

Verlander may be Vern-rable

Justin Verlander may be the frontrunner for the AL Cy Young but he’s actually started to look human since mid-June allowing 12 earned runs in his last four starts. As a result, the Astros have dropped three of their last four games with Verlander on the mound with two of those coming at Minute Maid Park. Now, before you rush out to bet the A’s, just know that he still owns a 2.15 ERA in 19 starts this season and owns a career ERA of 2.68 in 18 starts vs the A’s.

On the flipside, the A’s will counter with lefty Sean Manaea, who has started to come around after having a rough May. Oakland has won five straight games when the southpaw gets the nod and his road ERA at 3.15 in nine road starts is pretty stellar. When you factor in that Oakland is 6-3 SU in those nine appearances, the A’s make an interesting case for an upset tonight.

OVER has been Profitable when these Teams Clash

The total opened at 7.5 and trends are pointing to an OVER. The OVER has hit in 10 of the last 14 games in this matchup with an average combined score of 11.1 runs per game. When you just look at the 2018 season, the OVER has hit in 7 of the 10 games between these two clubs with an average combined score of 9.9 runs per game. Needless to say, the scoreboard looks like it’s going to get lit up.
