Odds to Win 2018-19 NBA Championship: New-Look Lakers Have Fourth-Best Odds to Go All the Way

Lakers listen to the National Anthem before playing the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center on April 11, 2018 in Los Angeles, California.

The balance of power in the NBA has usually been in the Western Conference and with the news of LeBron James heading west, the Lakers have launched to the third-best odds to win the NBA Championship.

With the Lakers announcing they have signed LeBron to a four-year contract, they now sit behind the Warriors and Celtics on the oddsboard to secure the 2018-19 title. The Warriors have since countered the Lakers' move by adding all-star forward DeMarcus “Boogie” Cousins to an already loaded roster and Golden State’s odds have now shifted to minus-money.

Online sportsbook Bovada has the defending champion Warriors at -175, followed by the Boston Celtics (+550), Houston Rockets (+600), Lakers (+650) and Philadelphia 76ers (+1600) to round out the top five.

CAN THE LAKERS OVERTHROW THE WARRIORS?

With the roster that’s currently constructed, the Lakers may not have enough firepower to topple the back-to-back champions. LeBron James on any roster gives you a legitimate chance to win the NBA title but Magic Johnson and company will still need to tinker with the roster to pair James with more superstars if they plan to seriously challenge Golden State (See: Kawhi Leonard).

This is a huge win for the Lakers. After toiling in the bottom of the NBA for the last six years, this rebuild gives the Lake Show a huge jump-start toward returning to prominence in the league hierarchy. However, being in the Western Conference gives the Lakers many more challenges than just Golden State as the Rockets, Thunder, Jazz and Blazers will stand in the way in Los Angeles’s journey back to glory.

CELTICS ARE NOT OVERLOOKED BY ODDSMAKERS

The Lakers’ biggest rival, the Boston Celtics, should also feel LeBron signing with LA is a huge win for them. LeBron leaving the Eastern Conference may have just opened the door wide open for contenders in the East who have been repeatedly blocked in their quest to get to the NBA Finals (ahem…Raptors).

The Celtics will have Kyrie “Uncle Drew” Irving and Gordon “Brad Stevens’ BFF” Hayward returning from injury to try to lead Boston to its 18th NBA championship. If it wasn’t for a superhuman performance from James in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final, the C’s may have been facing the Warriors for the 2018 NBA title.
