The New York Red Bulls are Soaring up the MLS Oddsboard

Taking down Atlanta United in hostile territory over the weekend, the New York Red Bulls did the impossible and in the process claimed top spot in the Major League Soccer power rankings and soared to +800 in the odds to win the MLS Cup at Bovada.

Bet on Major League Soccer here

8/1 is a far cry from the 20/1 value the Bulls were being offered at a few short weeks ago and if you listened to my advice, you’re sitting pretty with a +2000 New York futures ticket.

If you didn’t, and still want to bet on New York at +800, I’d say go ahead. The Red Bulls have proven that they belong among the elite in Major League Soccer with league victories against NYCFC and Atlanta, a deep run in CONCACAF Champions League and a semifinal MLS Cup campaign last season.

There wasn’t a ton of other movement on the board but Toronto FC did manage to creep from +1400 to +1200, earning a 2-1 home win vs Orlando City on Friday.

It looks like TFC could be turning a corner onto the straight and narrow and once they start to heal up, they’ll be a squad not to be trifled with. Your time to get any kind of value on the Reds is quickly evaporating.

Atlanta United stumbled a bit last week but The Five Stripes managed to retain top spot in the odds to win the MLS Cup with their overall points lead still intact. They’ll be challenged by the streaking New York Red Bulls this weekend, though, and an upset could be in the offing in the Dirty South.

Bet on Major League Soccer here

Dropping from +400 to +500 in the odds at Bovada, Atlanta showed a chink in the armor and opened the door to teams like NYCFC, Orlando City and, of course, their opponents this weekend.

The Red Bulls have climbed all the way to +1200 in the odds after sitting at +2000 last week and they’re well primed to take over top spot in the Major League Soccer power rankings with a win in Atlanta.

I suggested New York as a value bet in MLS Cup futures in last week’s update and at 12/1, that still feels good to me. Wait much longer, though, and you’ll be sent down the Hudson River and into the sea of no value.

Toronto toppled in the odds again after another week of toiling and things are beginning to look dire with Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore both set to miss Friday’s fixture against a stoked Orlando City side.

You’re getting a lovely bit of value at +1400 for TFC and while it may seem asinine to suggest that they’re still the best team in MLS, I haven’t seen enough to dethrone the Reds. This is going to take some patience but the rewards could be glorious if we’re disciplined.

Atlanta United continued its reign over Major League Soccer over the weekend, extinguishing the Fire 2-1 in Chicago and along with retaining their title as the favorites to win the MLS Cup, the Five Stripes took over first place in the Eastern Conference and the overall standings. Atlanta has established itself as one of the top three teams in the league and right now they’re impossible to fade.

That said, Atlanta’s +400 price at Bovada is steep if you missed the boat on +800 at the beginning of the season as it’s still early days in Major League Soccer with the majority of the drama yet to unfold.

Below, I’ve broken down some of the best MLS futures value bets that I’ve identified heading into this week’s action.

MLS Cup Value Bets

Toronto FC +1000:

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before but TFC is still the best MLS club until proven otherwise. It looks like they’ve finally rebounded from their taxing Champions League run and they dispatched the Philadelphia Union 3-0 on home turf on Friday. The Reds’ price will only go down from here on out.

Sporting Kansas City +1000:

Not great odds for a value bet but the West is thin and Sporting Kansas City has a true home-field advantage. Expect KC to carry one of the top two seeds in the Western Conference into the playoffs and ride their home success to a deep MLS Cup run.

New york red bulls +2000:

Battering their New York compatriots 4-0 in the Hudson River Derby on Saturday, the Red Bulls showed their might against one of the league’s best teams. +2000 is a great price despite the heavy competition out of the East.

A road trip that lasted nearly two months could not have gone much better for LAFC. The team I’ve affectionately started calling the Angels took 12 out of a potential 18 points in six straight fixtures away from home, returning to Los Angeles as heroes and with +1000 odds to hoist the MLS Cup after opening the 2018 campaign at +4000, a line that – in hindsight – looks laughable.

That wasn’t enough for this upstart club, though, as there was work to be done at the freshly opened Banc of California Stadium with a home match against the well-versed Seattle Sounders separating LAFC from its first home win.

While they didn’t turn in the performance of the season, LAFC claimed victory in its inaugural home fixture and climbed to +800 in the odds to win the MLS Cup (a record for the new-found club) and established itself as a powerhouse in the Western Conference.

If Bob Bradley can continue to churn out results on the road and simultaneously turn the Banc of California Stadium into a fortress, this is going to be a tough team to beat. They score, they defend and they’re organized. Most MLS clubs have one or two of those traits at most.

League Check-In

There was little change to odds for the contenders outside of LA (the Galaxy dropped all the way to +1600 after yet another loss) with Atlanta and NYCFC winning again and TFC continuing its search for league success.

The Reds remain a wise bet at their current odds of +1000 given what they’re capable of but they’ll have to shape up in a hurry if they want to avoid the first round of playoffs.

Dispatching a team from Los Angeles for the second straight week, Atlanta United has asserted itself atop the precipice of Major League Soccer and oddsmakers have taken note, making the Five Stripes +450 favorites to win the MLS Cup in the latest update.

It’s likely that Atlanta and New York City FC will do some jockeying in the coming weeks and the two powerhouses will actually meet again on June 9. The explosive sides clashed earlier this month,  producing some sublime football in a 2-2 draw. They’re two of the three highest-scoring teams in the league and I fully expect them both to finish 2018 in the top half of the playoff picture.

TFC Can Now Refocus on the league

A sailed penalty kick from Michael Bradley was the final nail in the coffin of TFC’s CONCACAF Champions League hopes and while Toronto set a new precedent for Major League Soccer in the silver-medal run, it came at a distinct cost. TFC now sits dead last in the Eastern Conference and Greg Vanney’s backline is completely decimated.

That said, now is when the Reds get back in the black. TFC’s odds to win the Cup are at a season-high +1000 after the defending champs opened as the +350 favorites and while the Canadian club sits 14 points back of NYCFC for first place in the conference, it also has three games in hand.

TFC is in a tough spot to begin its domestic redemption this week, however. With a tough match against Chicago on the docket, we might be able to wait one more week to make this bet.

Ibrah Update

Playing a full 90 minutes for the first time since his ACL tear in the Galaxy’s loss to Atlanta last week, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has not necessarily been the savior he looked like he would be after that heroic performance in the El Traffico.

Since his unforgettable debut, he’s scored once in nearly 200 minutes of action, in which LA has picked up just three points.

If the Galaxy are going to be title contendors, Ibrah will have to have a little more to say going forward but at 36 years of age, that might be asking too much.

Last place. That’s not where you’d expect the defending MLS Cup champions to be at this point in the season but it’s exactly where Toronto FC finds itself. The Reds’ busy CONCACAF Champions League schedule has bogged them down domestically and they’ve accumulated just three points after four matches, 14 points back of first-place NYCFC.

Because of this, TFC has slipped all the way to +700 in the odds to win the 2018 MLS Cup at Bovada after opening the campaign as +350 favorites. That said, now could be the perfect time to pounce on the Reds if you haven’t done so yet.

Already bet on Toronto to win the Cup at shorter odds? Get that hand off the panic button. TFC was in a similar scenario last season, registering just one win in the first six matches. They proceeded to win six consecutive matches, reasserting themselves in the league.

With just one match left in Champions League, an extremely talented Toronto side will quickly climb back into the Major League Soccer playoff race, of that I have little doubt.

You will want to hedge, though, and while NYCFC has been the toast of the East thus far, I think Atlanta is the more talented club. The Five Stripes are the highest-scoring outfit in Major League Soccer and their performance against LAFC a little over a week ago was scary.

If you’re looking for a longer shot, you might want to consider one or both of the clubs in Los Angeles as it looks like the Galaxy and LAFC could be teams to beat in the West. At +1000 and +1600, you’re getting excellent odds on either considering that ranks them at one and three in MLS futures in respect to the other Western Conference teams.

Beyond the top four teams in the odds to win the MLS Cup, I’m not sure anyone else has a shot. NYCFC, Atlanta United, Toronto FC and the LA Galaxy are far and away the most talented clubs in the competition and it won’t be long before they separate from the pack.

Tier 1

The odds from MyBookie reflect this to a degree with those four teams occupying the top four spots but in my opinion, TFC is still at the tippy-top of that heap and they should be the favorites to hoist the Cup for a second straight year.

Once Toronto’s travel schedule eases back, the Reds will settle into their domestic competition and they’ll quickly work themselves up the MLS ladder.

As for Atlanta, I’m not quite sold but that 5-0 decimation of LAFC last week brought back memories of Ilya Kovalchuk and a long-gone Thrashers squad that scored at will when Kovie was in his prime. That said, Atlanta opened the season at +1000 so I’m not crazy about the lost value. Wait for a dip in form if you like this team for a Cup run.

Tier 2

This portion of the table makes up the biggest chunk of teams with 15 of the 23 MLS clubs falling within the +1300 to +3300 range.

Is there a contender hidden among these ranks? Maybe, but I doubt it. Every one of these clubs has shown some sort of distinct and ugly wart in the early going and while I might be quick to write them off, I don’t think I’m far off.

LAFC was the one dark horse I had serious faith in but that performance against Atlanta has me thinking about calling the glue factory to see if they’ll give me a discount on my long-shot pony.

Tier 3

The five teams at the bottom of the odds table are there for good reason – they are not very good. A bet on any one of Minnesota, Philadelphia, Montreal, San Jose or DC United would be ill-advised and borderline masochistic. Avoid if possible.

Stunning not only Major League Soccer but the entire football world with an absolute wonder goal within minutes of his first substitute appearance for the LA Galaxy, Zlatan Ibrahimovic helped his new club overcome a 3-0 deficit in the first-ever El Traffico and the five-time MLS Cup champs are now +900 to win for a sixth time this season after opening with +1600 odds.

While it’s not out of this world (get it?) to think the Zlatan can propel the Galaxy past expectations, it’s a tad unrealistic to say he’s made them twice as good. At the end of the day, Ibrah is a 36-year-old man (who will be 37 by the time playoffs roll around) who’s coming off a devastating knee injury and I’m not convinced his body will hold up over the course of an arduous MLS season.

I will need to see a lot more from this team before I place any futures money on the blue side of LA to win the MLS Cup at current odds.

A bet I do like at current odds is Toronto FC at +500 at Bovada. The Reds are coming off their first win of the young MLS season and their odds to win the Cup somehow worsened. Toronto is starting to roll after a 3-1 drubbing of Club America in the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday and with a stretch of winnable domestic games, TFC could see its number to go back to back climb into the +350 range.

If you haven’t gotten a futures bet in on the Reds this year, now is the time to strike.

A highly publicized transfer for the man, the myth, the Zlatan, triggered a +2000 to +1400 move in the Los Angeles Galaxy’s odds to win the MLS Cup but if you asked Ibrah, he’d probably say LA should be the new favorite.

Many – including myself – are hoping that Zlatan features this Saturday when the Galaxy take part in the first-ever LA Derby with the brand new (and still undefeated) Los Angeles Football Club invading the StubHub Center on the weekend.

While that could be a tad unrealistic given Big Z’s lack of game action this season, the prospect has made the Galaxy a -115 favorite for the Derby at Bovada and if you’re looking for a nice betting spot, this could be it. LAFC is 2-0 through its first two contests and it’s a club that’s beginning to look like a contender with a plus-five goal differential already. They're being offered at +300 at Bodog and they've already cashed twice as huge underdogs.

Beyond that, there was little movement in MLS futures after an abbreviated international schedule but expect that to change with a full-fledged slate on the upcoming docket.

Since the beginning of the 2018 MLS season, I’ve been preaching patience and with TFC being offered at +450 to win the Cup after another slow start, now is when that discipline pays off.

Toronto opened the campaign with +350 odds to repeat but with zero points after two games, bookmakers at Bovada dropped TFC’s futures price and the Reds are now neck and neck with NYCFC – perfect.

I still believe Toronto is the most talented club in the league and while I probably sound a lot like a skipping record, the Reds’ focus is not on the MLS right now. The club has made it all the way to the semis of the CONCACAF Champions League and is trying to become the first Major League Soccer team to win the competition.

The more MLS games TFC loses while competing in CONCACAF Champions League, the better. Once they’re knocked out – or they win – the Reds will turn their attention to the domestic play and they will start dominating.

Until that happens, feel comfortable betting on Toronto every time you see its value to win the league has increased.

Another week down in the Major League Soccer season and another win for LAFC. The brand new club spanked Real Salt Lake 5-1 in Utah and rose yet again in the odds to win the MLS Cup.

Bob Bradley’s return to American soil could not be going any better and it’s a bit spooky given he’s the only manager to ever lead an MLS club to a Cup in its inaugural season. Opening the campaign with +4000 odds to lift the trophy, LAFC has already seen that line slashed in half and can now be bet at +2000, an important number given what I said last week in the archived article below.

Los Angeles is for real and if you ask me, they’re still the best value on the board until they prove otherwise.

Best of the Rest

Toronto FC has yet to be budged from its perch but the Reds are in real danger of beginning their season 0-2 with a tough fixture in Montreal on the docket. While the Impact are not the best team in the East (or in Canada, for that matter), they play TFC really tight and they’ve gotten the best of them in recent matchups.

If the Reds do, in fact, drop three points again this weekend, their value could potentially be bumped up on the futures table and if that’s the case, it’s an amazing betting opportunity.

Toronto has been run ragged by CONCACAF Champions League travel and has to be a bit jet-lagged after a hard-fought battle in Mexico that saw the Reds move on to the semifinals of the competition.

I feel compelled to drive home the point that TFC is still the best club in Major League Soccer. Do not forget this.

The first week of Major League Soccer games snuck up on us rather quickly and according to TFC’s dreadful result in the opener, it snuck up on them too. Despite the loss, the defending champs stayed put at the top of the odds to win the MLS Cup table but there was significant movement elsewhere with LAFC winning its inaugural match against the 2016 MLS champions.

Should I bet on LAFC to win the Cup?

It’s an interesting question and it’s one I answered last week when I put forward LAFC as a potential long shot in MLS futures. Back then, the league’s newest club was +4000 to win the Cup and now, after just one result, they’ve shot all the way to +2500. If you want to put a punt on this team, your time could quickly run out if they continue this success and I wouldn’t suggest betting them at anything less than +2000 before seeing a much larger body of work.

Is TFC still a good team?

Absolutely. Toronto is still head and shoulders above any other team in MLS and they proved it earlier this week when they stood their ground vs Tigres UANL in the first leg of a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal tie, winning the fixture with a late goal to get them across the line 2-1.

TFC lost its first game of the season to Columbus because the team is focused on accomplishing a feat that no MLS club has – win the CONCACAF Champions League.

I still consider +350 good value for this club but if they lose again and have a slow start to the season, that value could grow. Remember, this is a team that began 2017 (a record-setting season) with just one win in its first six matches.

With the Major League Soccer season opening this weekend, it’s time to think about grabbing some good betting value on the MLS Cup futures board.

Toronto FC is the defending champion and is deserving of the top spot on the outright winner board at +350 at online book Bovada. The league’s best team added to their already strong side, including ex-PSG defender Gregory van der Wiel, and while they will face stiff competition in the East from the likes of Atlanta United (+800) and New York City FC (+1000), TFC will boast some of the best talent in the league.

Andrew Avery and Rob Trites take a look at the futures board and pick one side to consider near the top of the board and one side with longer odds that has some serious betting value attached.

Get those MLS futures bets in ASAP and check out the video above as the guys make their favorite picks for the opening weekend of the season!

Favorites

Andrew: Atlanta United (+800)

It’s going to be tough sledding for Atlanta United with the quality and depth in the East, but this is going to be a good side once again.

Playing in front of a packed arena regularly and making it into the playoffs made the club’s first season an incredible one, but this is a side primed to make a giant leap in its second season.

The loss of Carlos Carmona in the middle of the park is a big one, but splashing some cash around for diminutive 18-year-old Argentine playmaker Ezequiel Barco was a very nice get for the club. Barco received a lot of attention in his Independiente days and a move to the MLS came as a surprise to a lot of people considering some European clubs were carefully monitoring his progress.

The Five Stripes also brought in Darlington Nagbe from Portland so the midfield gets some good experience to replace the departing Chilean Carmona. Nagbe has scored 27 goals in the league and adds some more great flair to what could prove to be one of the most exciting teams to watch (especially if the Barco purchase pans out).

TFC is the fave and for good reason but repeating as champs is very tough. The value for Atlanta is great and a lot hinges on how Barco adapts, but this kid could be Giovinco-esque in terms of excitement. At the very least, a futures ticket on Atlanta gets you invested and motivated to watch them, and that could be reward enough.

Rob: Toronto FC (+350)

An obvious pick – maybe – but TFC is the +350 favorite for a reason. The Reds are damn good and are coming off the best season in MLS history in which they won the Canadian Championship, the Supporters’ Shield and, of course, the MLS Cup.

Many have paralleled Toronto’s recent success with that of the Golden State Warriors and the Dubs didn’t just open as favorites to win the NBA championship, they opened at minus-money.

For me, +350 is great value for a TFC side that was actually bolstered in the offseason by three massive signings. Gregory van der Wiel, Auro and Ager Aketxe are all highly touted coming into 2018 and I have no doubt in Greg Vanney’s ability to squeeze them into an already stacked lineup.

Long shots

Andrew: Orlando City (+3300)

It’s tough with no Kaka and no Cyle Larin, but Orlando City has regrouped and rearmed for the new season. Incoming are Josue Colman, Sacha Kljestan, Justin Meram, Oriol Rosell, Lamine Sane, Cam Lindley and then the list goes on. The Lions are a deep, deep side and will need contributions up and down the roster for this bet to cash. But hey, that’s the point of the long-shot wager, isn’t it?

Orlando was 10th in the East one season ago but this retooled side should definitely assist in making a significant leap up the table this year. Kljestan will miss out early in the regular season through suspension but the club has addressed the departure of their two superstars with some great players and +3300 is some great value.

Rob: LAFC (+4000)

The first MLS team to ever open its inaugural season in a purpose-built stadium, LAFC has a long climb to the top of the mountain but with an experienced manager in Bob Bradley and Carlos Vela at the No. 10 spot, this is a club that could make some real noise in a jumbled Western Conference.

While he was essentially laughed out of his last gig in Wales, Bradley is no stranger to massive and surprising success in Major League Soccer as he led the Chicago Fire to an MLS Cup victory in their inaugural season back in 1998.

The MLS is (obviously) a much different beast than it was in ’98 but it’s unpredictability makes long shots like this possible and this is a club poised for success with the financial backing of the Peter Guber Ownership Group.

Here’s the complete futures board heading into the opening weekend of the season.
