Uruguay has won the World Cup twice, but it was many moons ago with their first win in 1930 and their second in 1950. They have also come in fourth twice (1954, 1970). They did not play in 2006 in Germany and in their last World Cup in 2002 they did not progress out of their group.
Uruguay has a solid defense, but their biggest strength may be that they are the hardest workers and will never be out-hustled to a ball. Their star players lead their offense, but they are known for being an inconsistent and unpredictable team. They will need to be consistent in order to make it out of Group A, especially when they face France and Mexico.
Diego Forlán of Atletico Madrid and Cristian Rodríguez of FC Porto lead the offense and while these two are solid and can find the back of the net Uruguay tends to miss out on golden opportunities to score and this was especially the case in World Cup qualifying. Mexico has a great defense and when they face them Uruguay has to score when given the chance. Center Back Diego Lugano of Fenerbahce is the captain on the team and will have to play solid defense, especially when they face France and their attacking offense.
Uruguay’s head coach is Oscar Washington Tabarez and he adapts his strategy and his formation depending on what opponent he is facing.
The big match for Uruguay may be their last one when they face Mexico. Both teams will likely be 1-1, winning against South Africa and losing to France, so this match may determine which team makes it to the playoffs, as the second place team in the group.
Uruguay has the squad to do well in this World Cup, but their defense has to play well and their offense and their stars have to play together and not squander scoring chances.
